Asia Cup 2024: Predictions & Tips

Odds on India winning Asia Cup
Mohammed Shami won’t be playing in the Asia Cup, but India might celebrate just like this

Asia Cup 2024 cricket will be hosted as a T20 competition by Sri Lanka. Due to the ongoing economic crisis in the host nation, the tournament venue has been shifted to the UAE. The competition, which was originally planned for 2020 was postponed to 2021.

A packed international schedule forced the schedule to be set finally for 2024. In this article, we provide our Asia Cup predictions and tips to help our readers who wish to bet on the event.

Favourites to Make the Asia Cup Final

In this segment of our Asia Cup predictions and tips, we consider the prospects of the various teams. India and Pakistan were among the first to name their squads for the competition.

The Indian team will see the return of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul to the squad. However, India, led by Rohit Sharma, will miss the presence of their best bowler, Jasprit Bumrah. Pakistan will also miss some experienced players such as Malik and Mohammad Hafeez. Bangladesh have also announced their list of players, with Shakib al Hasan at the helm.

Despite the absence of opener Tamim Iqbal, Bangladesh will relish the prospect of a strong squad. The team will rely on the experience of Shakib, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah. Afghanistan have also named their players for the tournament. Sri Lanka have yet to name their squads. Regardless, we have considered prospective players who have represented Sri Lanka recently.

🇮🇳 Can India Make it 3 in a Row?

The Indian squad for the ICC T20 Asia Cup is a strong one, despite the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. The top-order batting features the likes of Sharma, Rahul, Kohli, Yadav, Pant and Hooda. Add finishers like Pandya and Karthik, as well as an all-rounder called Jadeja. You now get to see a very strong batting line-up.

The bowling includes consistent wicket-takers in Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Chahal, with ample support from the likes of Ashwin, Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan. The bench strength also runs deep, with the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel and Deepak Chahar. Clearly, defending champions India are the team to beat. The last time around, the tournament was run in an ODI format.

A T20 format suits India’s rivals better as upsets are more likely in the shortest version. However, the form of the players in recent matches bodes well for skipper Rohit Sharma’s men. Having said that, India will be wary of Pakistan, who beat them in the T20 world cup in 2021.

🇧🇩 Third Time is the Charm for Bangladesh?

Bangladesh, who made it into the final on two previous occasions, have yet to win an Asia Cup title. Could this be the time? The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has listed 17 players led by Shakib al Hasan for the competition.

Other experienced players returning to the squad include Mushfiqur Rahim, Ebadat Hossain, Sabbir Rahman, and Mohammad Saifuddin. On paper at least, the team has a good mix of batters and bowlers. Mahmudullah will help shore up the batting down the order.

The likes of Taskin Ahmed and Mehidy Hasan Miraz will add to the bowling armoury of skipper Shakib and Mushfiqur Rahim.

🇵🇰 How is Pakistan Standing Ahead of the Asia Cup?

Having beaten India in the 2021 T20 world cup, Pakistan would be looking forward to repeating the feat. Pakistan could try to use shock value against India by including the likes of Naseem Shah, Md Nawaz, and Haider Ali in their eleven. India have never played against these men, and that could prove advantageous to Babar Azam’s squad.

Remember what happened when Indian batters faced Shaheen Afridi for the first time in the 2021 T20 world cup? Pakistan have some good batters in the form of Babar Azam, Rizwan, Fakhar Zaman and Asif Ali. They also have such bowlers as Haris Rauf and Usman Qadir to support Afridi. Though they will miss the experienced duo of Malik and Hafeez, Pakistan have a decent allrounder in the form of Shadab Khan.

For Pakistan to snatch away the Asia Cup from India, several of their key players will have to fire simultaneously. I believe that is easier said than done, especially in a tense match against their traditional rivals. However, stranger things have happened.

🇱🇰 Will Sri Lanka Be Back Where They Belong?

Sri Lanka have been rebuilding their side in the last few years. And their efforts have paid dividends. Players like Nisanka, Shanaka, Hasaranga and Theeksaana have stood up to be counted. Add experienced players like Gunathilaka, Rajapaksa, Mendis, and Karunaratne to the mix. Suddenly, you have a side with potential.

One problem with Sri Lanka has been their poor showing abroad. At home, they can rub shoulders with the best, as they proved against the Australian visitors, recently. However, they are probably a few good matches away from acquiring the confidence to match their talent. Until then, their Asia Cup dream will remain a dream.

🇦🇫 Will We See Any Major Surprise?

Can we see Afghanistan or the sixth team make it to the final? That would be a major surprise. However, as Afghanistan have proved time and again, no team can take them for granted. They have some world-class talents in their squad.

In skipper Mohammad Nabi, they have a world-class all-rounder. Najibullah Zadran and H Zazai are competent batters. There are also some other useful all-rounders such as A Omarzai and S Singh. That said, Afghanistan’s real strength is in their bowling. Rashid Khan is one of the best leg break googly bowlers in the world.

Mujeeb ur Rahman and Naveen ul Haq have established themselves in international cricket. So, can Afghanistan pull off an upset or two? I certainly think so. They could even head their group. Can they beat India and Pakistan in the same competition and go on to win the Asia Cup? I don’t think so. Their batting frailties make that a pipe dream, at least for now.

So Who Will Win Asia Cup 2024?

Who is our predicted winner of the title? All things considered, I think India will be the team to beat at this year’s edition of the Asia Cup. Man for man, the Indian team is stronger than the next strongest squad, Pakistan.

Pakistan’s fortunes at the competition will revolve around the form of a few players, such as Babar Azam, Rizwan, and Afridi. By contrast, India are strong in all departments, with 11 prospective match winners.

Top Players to Look Out for at the Asia Cup

We focus this part of our Asia Cup tips on the top players likely to feature in the competition.

Who Will Score the Most Runs?

The prolific Indian opener KL Rahul has returned to cricketing action. And that is bad news for rival teams’ bowlers. We expect Rahul to plunder the runs at the top of the Indian batting order. He could face stiff competition from Pakistan opener M Rizwan who has been very consistent over the last two years.

Who Will Be the Highest Wicket Taker?

There are many likely candidates for the highest wicket taker. The names that come to mind include India’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Yuzvendra Chahal. They are likely to face stiff competition from Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan and Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi.

Who will be the player of the tournament?

In my view, Hardik Pandya is the most likely candidate for player of the tournament. During the T20 world cup last year, the India allrounder had not fully recovered from injury. Consequently, he was not able to bowl a full quota of overs. But since that competition, Pandya has recovered his bowling form as well. His ability to take crucial wickets while scoring precious runs in the death overs make Hardik Pandya my favourite candidate.

Another player who could give stiff competition to Hardik is Pakistan paceman Shaheen Afridi. In last year’s T20 world cup, Afridi helped Pakistan to their first ever world cup win over India. In an impressive opening spell, he removed India’s dangerous openers Sharma and Rahul in quick succession. India never recovered from those deadly blows.

Asia Cup Odds

Before you engage in Asia Cup betting, keep an eye on the Asia Cup odds offered by various sites. Cricket betting odds determine how much you can expect to win from a successful bet. In this section of our Asia Cup predictions and tips, we teach our readers some important things about betting odds:

Understand How Odds Are Calculated

So, it is important to know how odds are calculated. Odds reflect the mathematical probability that a match will end in a certain outcome. Odds also depend on the bets that punters have already placed. Thus, odds also reflect the sentiment of the betting public.

Punters will usually favour one team over another. That team will be deemed the favourite while the other will be called an underdog. Bookmakers will offer higher odds on the underdog team. So, if you want higher returns, you could bet on the underdog and hope for an upset.

Choose the Odds Format You Are Most Comfortable With

Bookmakers display odds in different ways. Some display multiple odds for a single game. Newbie punters may find this confusing. The most common type of odds are decimal odds. There are also Moneyline or American odds that display a negative sign to indicate a favourite side.

Likewise, they use a positive sign for the underdog. A negative sign accompanies the minimum amount you must stake to win $100. Odds accompanying a positive sign indicating what return a bet of 100 will earn you. Some bookmakers use fractional odds.

Choose the Bookmaker Who Gives the Best Returns

As a bettor, you must be aware that bookmakers include their profit margin in the odds quoted. Regardless of whether you win or lose, the bookmaker will get a part of the wager. That’s the reason some bookmakers offer better odds than others.

They are willing to reduce their profit margin by offering the punter a better return on his wager. That’s why you must find out which bookmakers are offering the best Asia Cup odds before placing a wager.
