Asia Cup 2024: Bookmakers Favour India

India’s bench strength makes the squad bookmakers’ favourites to defend the Asia Cup crown they won in 2018. In fact, India have won back-to-back titles. More importantly, they have done so without being able to field their preferred eleven on each occasion.

This year’s competition, which is due to begin on 27 August, will be hosted by Sri Lanka in the UAE. Owing to the ongoing economic crisis in the host nation, the competition was moved to the UAE. This year’s Asia Cup will be a T20 tournament.

India vs Pakistan Will Set the Tone

Afghanistan and Sri Lanka will clash in the first match of the competition on 27 August in Dubai. However, the match between India and Pakistan at the same venue on 28 August will set the tone. The winner of the game will get a psychological edge and could run away with the title.

While India are favourites, Pakistan could upset their applecart, as Babar Azam’s men proved in the T20 world cup last year. Afghanistan are another side that no rival team can underestimate. They have the bowlers to defend even a small target.

Asia Cup 2024

Players to Watch

India: Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya is arguably India’s most valuable player. His ability to bowl four overs and take wickets complements his batting skill that provides quick runs in the end overs.

Pakistan: Shaheen Afridi

Shaheen Afridi’s dismissal of Sharma and Rahul at the T20 world cup in 2021 is fresh in memory. That spell helped Pakistan to their first ever world cup win against India. Afridi will continue to hold the key to Pakistan’s chances of upsetting tournament favourites India.

Afghanistan: Rashid Khan

Rashid Khan has proved to be more than a handful in international cricket. His exploits in the IPL helped Gujarat to the title. He complements his leg break googly bowling with his ability with the bat.

Sri Lanka: Wanindu Hasaranga

Hasaranga has emerged as the star performer for Sri Lanka, recently. The incisive leg break bowler can also bat a bit, making him the ideal team man for T20 cricket.

Bangladesh: Shakib Al Hasan

Shakib Hasan has been awarded the Bangladesh T20 captaincy until the 2024 world cup. Shakib’s exploits with the ball are legendary. In recent years, he has emerged as a top order batsman who can anchor the innings or slog if required.

Tournament Format

Six teams – India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and a qualifier– will take part in the tournament. The qualifier will be the winner of a match between UAE and Kuwait to be played in Oman on 21 August.

The qualifier will be placed in Group A, alongside India and Pakistan. The other three teams will fight it out in Group B. The teams will be divided into two round robin leagues of three teams each. The top two teams of each group will qualify for the Super 4.

The top two teams emerging from the Super 4 will clash in the final. That match will be held at Dubai’s Dubai International Stadium on 11 September.
