Sri Lanka Tour of India 2024

Sri Lanka are currently on a tour of India to play three T20Is and two test matches. The series will mark Rohit Sharma’s debut as the permanent test captain of India.

First T20I, Feb 24, Lucknow

Sri Lanka won the toss, the last thing they did right on the day. They elected to field and India’s batsmen used the opportunity to bat Sri Lanka out of the match. On the back of a 111-run opening stand, India went on to score 199 for 2 in their allotted overs. Ishan Kishan (89 in 56 balls) was the pick of the Indian batters.

India bowlers dominate

When Sri Lanka replied, they lost regular wickets. Shanaka was out with the scorecard reading 60 for 5 in the 11th over. The match was all but over, despite late order cameos from Karunaratne and Chameera. The visitors were restricted to 137/6 in their allotted overs.

Second T20I, Feb 26, Dharamsala

Put in, to bat, Sri Lanka got off to a great start, with a 67-run opening stand inside nine overs. But they lost momentum with a flurry of wickets. They were  reduced to 76 for 3 in 11 overs. When Chandimal was fourth out, the visitors’ scorecard read 102 for 4 in 14.4 overs.

Shanaka to the rescue

Nobody would have been prepared for the following assault on the Indian bowlers, led by skipper Shanaka. The skipper scored an unbeaten 47 in 19 balls to take the score to a formidable 183/5. No Indian bowler took more than one wicket. However, Bumrah impressed, giving away only 24 runs in his four overs.

India’s batting powerhouse to the fore

India’s successful chase of a daunting target underscored their strong batting credentials. Both openers went cheaply Shreyas Iyer (74 not out from 44 balls) got into the act. Sanju Samson (39) and Jadeja (45 not out from 18) helped Iyer take India past the line. They did so, with seven wickets and three overs to spare.

Third T20I, Feb 27, Dharamsala

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first. They soon lost three wickets in the space of four overs with only 11 runs on the board. The visitors needed big runs from both experienced campaigner Chandimal and skipper Dasun Shanaka. Things got worse when they lost two more wickets – including Chandimal’s – by the 13th over.

Shanaka leads from the front again

As in the 2nd match, Shanaka took it upon himself to push his side to a competitive score. Adding 86 runs in the company of Karunaratne, the Sri Lankan captain scored an unbeaten 74. The knock — from 38 balls – featured 9 fours and 2 sixes. The final score, though modest at 146/5, gave the visitors something to defend. Avesh Khan (2/23) was India’s best bowler.

India cruise to victory

In their reply, India lost skipper Rohit Sharma in the first over. Then came a 45-run stand between Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer that set the tone for the rest of the innings. After Samson’s departure at 51 for 2, Iyer (73 not out) helped himself to a third successive fifty. India cantered to victory with six wickets and over 3 overs to spare.
