Will World Cup 2024 Be A Big Coming Out Party for Denmark?

Denmark drew the attention of football buffs when they emerged the surprise champions of Euro 1992. That was thirty long years ago. A lot of water has since flowed under the proverbial bridge. However, in recent years, the Danes have emerged as a force to reckon with in European football.

On the watch of manager Kasper Hjulmand, the current young side is overflowing with talent. Star players Dolberg, Højbjerg, Eriksen, Christensen, and Kjær are combining with their less experienced colleagues to display brilliant chemistry.

The shock collapse – during Euro 2020 — of their star playmaker Christian Eriksen served to galvanise the Red and Whites. With Eriksen back at his best, Hjulmand’s wards will look forward to showing off their wares in Qatar.

Denmark’s Performances Since 2018

In 2018, in Russia, Denmark stayed unbeaten in a group that also had France, Australia and Peru. They beat Peru and held both Australia and France to draws. It took a penalty shootout in the round of 16 to Croatia before the tournament saw the back of the Danes.

During Euro 2020, the Danish Dynamite overcame their star player Christian Eriksen’s cardiac arrest. Baffling the pundits, they ran all the way to the semi-finals.

In the Nations League in June 2024, the Danes lost once again to Croatia (1-0). They compensated for the loss by beating Austria and France (2-1). They went on to beat France a second time around (2-0) in September.

How Denmark Qualified for World Cup 2024

Denmark began their Group F qualification campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win over Israel. They followed that up with wins over Moldova (8-0), Austria (4-0), Scotland (2-0), Israel (5-0), Moldova (4-0), and Austria (1-0). Thus, they registered eight wins in as many games, without conceding a goal.

In their next game, the Danes conceded their first goal of the campaign when they beat Faroe Islands 3-1. Having already qualified, their motivation dipped somewhat as the Danes lost 2-0 to Scotland in the 10th game.

Denmark’s Pathway In World Cup 2024

De Rød-Hvide have earned a reputation for their strong defence. If their forwards can, likewise, find creative expression, Denmark could go on to create history at World Cup 2024.

Denmark are placed in Group D, along with champions France. They are expected to prevail over Tunisia and Australia, the other two sides in the group, and reach the round of 16.

Assuming that they finish second in the group, skipper Eriksen’s men will meet the first-placed team from group C. The group comprises Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Poland. If they reach the quarter-final, they will meet either the group A winners or the group B runners up. Group A comprises Netherlands, Senegal, Ecuador and Qatar, while Group B includes England, Iran, USA and Wales. Their semi-final opponent could be Brazil.

If they top the group, they will meet the second placed team from group C. In the quarter-final, they are likely to face either the group B winners or the group A runners up. Their semi-final opponent, if they get that far, could be Belgium, Spain, Germany, or Portugal.

Clearly, topping their group D could be Denmark’s best pathway to the final.
