World Cup 2024: Who Will Make the Last 16?

Thirty-two teams divided into eight groups of four each will compete in the World Cup 2024. The global sports event to be hosted by Qatar is set to begin in the fourth week of November.

Which Teams Will Get Past the Group Stage

Below, we have analysed the various groups in order to predict which teams will make it to the last 16.

Group A

This group consists of Ecuador, Qatar, Netherlands, and Senegal. Netherlands and Senegal, ranked 10th and 20th respectively, are likely to qualify for the round of 16.

Group B

England, USA, Iran, and Wales are the teams placed in group B. England ranked fifth and USA ranked 15th are favoured by bookmakers to get past the group stage.

Group C

Group C has Argentina, Poland, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia. Going purely by rankings, 4th-ranked Argentina and 9th-ranked Mexico should go through.

Group D

Australia, Denmark, France and Tunisia are the four teams in this group. This group is arguably the easiest to predict. 11th-ranked Denmark are likely to join defending champions France in the round of 16.

Group E

This group comprises Germany, Japan, New Zealand and Spain. Going strictly by rankings, 7th-ranked Spain and 12th-ranked Germany are likely to qualify for the last 16.

Group F

In Group F, Belgium, Croatia, Morocco and Canada will compete for places in the last 16In all probability, 2018 finalists Croatia and 2nd-ranked Belgium will get past this group.

Group G

Group G will have Brazil, Switzerland, Serbia and Cameroon vying for places in the round of 16. Top-ranked Brazil and 14th-ranked Switzerland are expected to finish as the two best teams in the group.

Group H

Possible Upsets

Upsets can help punters maximise the returns from their wagers. Every World Cup competition held since the inaugural event in 1930 has had its share of upsets. Lower ranked teams have often beaten teams considered to be stronger. In the upcoming World Cup 2024 in Qatar, we would expect punters to keep an eye on the following matches.

Group A: All matches involving Qatar

Hosts Qatar will enjoy playing in home conditions backed by huge crowd support.

Group B: Wales vs USA

Wales ranked three places below USA could finish second to England. Interestingly, Wales and USA have met just once before in an international friendly. That game which took place in November 2020 ended in a goalless stalemate.

Group C: Poland vs Mexico

We expect this match to be crucial. 26th-ranked Poland could prove a tough hurdle for Mexico. Qualification from this group could be decided on goal difference.

The teams have met on 3 previous occasions. Poland beat Mexico 3-1 in World Cup 1978. The next meeting between the sides was an international friendly in 2011 that ended in a 1-1 draw. The teams last met in a friendly in 2017. That game went 1-0 in Mexico’s favour.

Group E: Japan vs Spain; Japan vs Germany

23rd-ranked Japan are capable of causing an upset against either or both of Spain and Germany. In April 2001, Spain beat Japan 1-0 in the only match between the sides. Japan and Germany have met twice in the past. In December 2004, the teams played an international friendly that ended 3-0 in Germany’s favour. In May 2006, the teams played out a 2-2 draw.

Group G: Switzerland vs Serbia

This could be a tight game. The sides have met just once in the past. In their only encounter in June 2018, Switzerland beat Serbia 2-1.

Conclusion

World Cup 2024 promises to be a hard-fought competition, with many possible upsets. Study the form of the teams and players in the fray before you bet on these games.
