Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards has expressed his bewilderment over Arsenal’s reported pursuit of Chelsea winger Noni Madueke, calling the potential transfer a “head-scratcher.”
As the Gunners aim to bolster their attacking arsenal this summer, manager Mikel Arteta has set his sights on several high-profile targets. Among them are Sporting CP’s prolific striker Viktor Gyokeres, Crystal Palace’s creative maestro Eberechi Eze, and Real Madrid’s dynamic winger Rodrygo. However, it’s the unexpected link to Chelsea’s Madueke that has raised eyebrows across the football world.
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano recently revealed, “Understand Arsenal are set to send an opening bid for Noni Madueke after agreeing on personal terms with the player.” Yet, Richards remains unconvinced about how the young Englishman fits into Arteta’s plans.
Richards Questions Madueke’s Role at Arsenal
Speaking on *The Rest is Football* podcast, Richards voiced his concerns: “I like Madueke as a player, but where does he fit in? He’s been playing on the left for Chelsea recently, but I see him as a right-sided player. And let’s be honest, he’s not going to displace Bukayo Saka, is he? Saka is a cornerstone of this Arsenal team. It just doesn’t make sense to me.”
Richards instead emphasized the importance of prioritizing a striker, highlighting Gyokeres as a more pressing need. “Gyokeres is a top striker, and that’s where Arsenal should focus first. They need someone who can lead the line and add firepower to their attack.”
Parker Backs Richards’ Stance on Madueke
Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker echoed Richards’ sentiments, stating that Madueke would struggle to secure a starting role at the Emirates. “Bukayo Saka is Arsenal’s talisman. He’s undroppable. Madueke is a similar player—he likes to cut in from the right onto his left foot, exactly like Saka. Unless Arteta intends to play him on the left, I don’t see how this works,” Parker told Gameshub.
Parker also expressed skepticism about the potential signing, noting the uneasy history between Arsenal and Chelsea in the transfer market. “Chelsea players moving to Arsenal doesn’t sit well with fans. I can’t imagine many Arsenal supporters would be thrilled about this deal.”
Gyokeres: The Missing Piece?
While Madueke’s potential arrival has sparked debate, the imminent signing of Gyokeres has been met with cautious optimism. Parker, however, believes Arsenal’s defensive-minded approach under Arteta could limit the impact of a new striker. “Gyokeres is a strong, young player who will add a set-piece threat, but Arteta’s system is still too negative. To win titles, Arsenal need to take more risks and be braver in their play.”
He added, “Arteta will need to tweak his tactics if Gyokeres is to truly make a difference. Crossing the ball and diversifying their attacking approach will be key.”
What’s Next for Arsenal?
With the summer transfer window heating up, Arsenal’s moves will be closely scrutinized as they aim to bridge the gap to Manchester City and Liverpool in the Premier League title race. Whether Madueke becomes a Gunner or Arteta opts for other targets, one thing is clear: the North London club is determined to strengthen its squad for the challenges ahead.
