Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki Pursuit Intensifies Amid Transfer Drama
In a summer of ambitious rebuilds, Manchester City have reportedly seen their initial bid for Lyon’s rising star, Rayan Cherki, turned down. The French midfielder, who has also caught the eye of Liverpool, is at the center of a heated transfer battle as City look to bounce back from a trophyless season.
After a forgettable campaign that saw them finish third in the Premier League and fall short in the FA Cup final, City’s hierarchy has been forced to accelerate their squad overhaul. Despite being the highest spenders in Europe last year, Pep Guardiola’s side is yet to make a splash in the 2025 summer transfer window. However, Cherki has emerged as a priority target.
Cherki’s Stellar Season Sparks Premier League Interest
The 21-year-old Lyon sensation enjoyed a breakthrough 2024/25 season, racking up eight goals and eleven assists in just 30 Ligue Un appearances. His electrifying performances have not gone unnoticed, and with his contract expiring in 2026, Cherki could be available for a modest £34 million fee.
Liverpool were initially in the mix, with head coach Arne Slot reportedly jetting off to meet the midfielder. However, the Reds’ focus shifted to Florian Wirtz, leaving City in pole position to secure Cherki’s signature. Recent reports suggest the player has already agreed on personal terms with the Premier League giants.
Cherki Drops Major Transfer Hint
Speaking during international duty with France, Cherki tantalizingly hinted at an imminent move to the Etihad. “Yes… it’s getting done. But you already know my answer, everybody knows,” he said when questioned about the transfer. “Now we have to enjoy and give everything, but after it will be done.”
Despite the optimism, negotiations with Lyon remain ongoing. German journalist Florian Pletternberg revealed that City’s first offer was rejected, but the club is preparing a second bid. “Cherki is waiting for an agreement between the clubs. Totally relaxed and fully focused on his match against Germany on Sunday,” Pletternberg noted. “He could possibly be in the starting XI after his excellent performance against Spain.”
What’s Next for Manchester City?
Guardiola’s side is also reportedly closing in on another signing, with a Premier League left-back rumored to be joining the ranks at the Etihad. As the summer transfer window heats up, City fans can expect more blockbuster moves to strengthen their squad.
