Man City tempted to offload £50m January signing as agent actively courts potential suitors.

Man City tempted to offload £50m January signing as agent actively courts potential suitors.

Manchester City’s midfield maestro Nico Gonzalez, who arrived with much fanfare from FC Porto in a £50 million deal this January, could already be on his way out of the Etihad, according to recent reports. The Spanish midfielder, brought in as a temporary fix for the injured Rodri, now finds himself in a precarious position as the club explores potential exits.

The 23-year-old made 17 appearances across all competitions in the latter half of the 2023/24 season, netting twice. However, he struggled to cement a regular starting spot in Pep Guardiola’s star-studded midfield. With Rodri back to full fitness, Nico’s chances of significant playing time next season appear slim, and the prospect of being reduced to Carabao Cup cameos and late substitutions in the Premier League and Champions League doesn’t sit well with the ambitious Spaniard.

Despite his short tenure at the club, rumours are swirling that Nico could be part of a summer clear-out. According to Football Insider and former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown, the player’s agent has been actively engaging with several clubs to facilitate a move away.

“Manchester City are inviting offers for Nico Gonzalez,” Brown revealed. “It’s a classic case of what I always warn against—rushing to sign a player to plug a gap, only to realise he’s not quite the fit you expected. Six months later, they’re already looking to move him on.”

Brown added that preliminary talks have been held with interested clubs as Guardiola aims to streamline his squad. “City have been testing the waters to find a buyer for him,” he said. “The player’s agent is drumming up interest, and it seems all parties are working towards making this happen. It’s a surprising turn of events after just six months, but the club has seemingly made its decision.”

However, not everyone is convinced that Nico’s departure is a done deal. Ben Jacobs, a reputable football journalist, tweeted, “Manchester City sources insist Nico Gonzalez remains part of their plans for next season, despite reports suggesting a summer exit.” Similarly, The Athletic’s Sam Lee dismissed the exit rumours entirely, stating that Nico “is in their plans for the coming season.”

The conflicting reports leave Nico’s future hanging in the balance. Will he stay and fight for his place in Guardiola’s midfield, or will he seek greener pastures to reignite his career? One thing is certain: the coming weeks will be pivotal for the young Spaniard.
