Sean Dyche Claims He Could Outperform Ruben Amorim at Manchester United
Former Everton and Burnley manager Sean Dyche has boldly claimed that he could “win more games” than current Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim if given the reins at Old Trafford. The Red Devils have endured a dismal Premier League campaign, languishing in 16th place with just two matches remaining. The situation has left fans frustrated and questioning Amorim’s ability to turn things around.
This season, Manchester United have managed only ten wins in 36 league games, with just four Premier League sides scoring fewer goals. Despite their struggles, there’s still a glimmer of hope: a victory in the Europa League final against Tottenham next week could secure them a spot in next season’s Champions League. However, failure to deliver could spell disaster for Amorim’s tenure.
Dyche, known for his pragmatic approach, didn’t hold back during a recent appearance on the Stick to Football podcast. “He’s not going to change the way he plays,” Dyche said of Amorim. “He better win some games – and pretty quick. I reckon if I went there and played my way, we’d win more games. Just 4-4-2 – give them basic rules of principles. We’re all going, ‘Fair play’ – but he’s been there a while now, so he better start bringing some wins soon.”

Dyche’s Blueprint for Success
Dyche emphasized the importance of winning as the foundation for survival and eventual success. He quoted former Leeds United manager Howard Wilkinson: “Win, survive, succeed. Basically, you have to win first, and then you can survive because you’re winning. Success is when you lay down all your principles and your playing style.”
The ex-Burnley boss believes Amorim needs to focus on immediate results to avoid further pressure. “If he can win enough, which is the worry at the minute, and then survive the process, and then succeed – that’s going to be better,” Dyche explained.
The Manchester United Dream
When asked about his managerial aspirations, Dyche revealed that managing Manchester United has always been a dream due to the club’s global stature. “It was always Manchester United because of the size of the club, not because it’s Man U – but due to the sheer grandeur, particularly back then,” he said. “I know they are going through a tough run at the minute, but the whole worldwide feel of it. That’s a big superpowered club.”
Pressure Mounting on Amorim
Dyche predicts that Amorim will face significant pressure early next season unless he can deliver a strong start. “I’d be surprised if Ruben Amorim is not under pressure [early next season],” Dyche said. “Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt this season – he’s laying down his platform for success, the future, and educating, let’s say. Then you get your pre-season, because now you’ve got that window to actually work on it, day in, day out. Shift a few players out who maybe don’t buy in, shift the players in who do buy in. Then, if it’s not early next season, how long do you go?”
Dyche added that Amorim’s success will be judged by mid-season. “If it’s not early next season, then I’d be saying, it hasn’t worked. So, if I’m the Director of Football, I’ll go right, ‘You’ve either got to change what you’re doing and make it work, or we make a change’.”
Southgate’s Missed Opportunity
Before Amorim’s appointment, Gareth Southgate was heavily linked with the Manchester United job. Dyche believes the former England manager would have been an excellent fit. “I thought the Manchester United job fitted Gareth [Southgate] really well,” Dyche said. “Coming out of the hardship of managing your country – because it is hard managing your country. The fans and the media can drive [decisions], but sometimes you’ve got to be brave enough. Think of all the managers down the years where clubs have been brave.”
As the season draws to a close, all eyes are on Old Trafford. Will Amorim rise to the occasion, or will the pressure prove too much? Only time will tell.
