The Gujarat Titans (GT) have made a strategic move to bolster their squad for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season by signing Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka as a replacement for the injured Glenn Phillips. Phillips, who suffered a groin injury while fielding during GT’s fourth match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, has been sidelined for the rest of the tournament.
The New Zealand international had a limited role this season, primarily confined to fielding duties, as Sherfane Rutherford was preferred as the overseas middle-order option. Phillips’ untimely injury has paved the way for Shanaka to step into the fray and bring his versatile skills to the GT camp.
Dasun Shanaka Returns to the Titans
Shanaka joins the Titans at his base price of INR 75 lakh, marking his second stint with the franchise after being part of their runner-up campaign in IPL 2023. The seam-bowling all-rounder, known for his ability to contribute with both bat and ball, has played three IPL matches so far, scoring 26 runs.
“Gujarat Titans (GT) have picked Sri Lanka’s Dasun Shanaka as a replacement for the injured Glenn Phillips for the remainder of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025,” stated an official IPL release.
Interestingly, Shanaka was recently seen training with the Delhi Capitals, fueling rumors of a potential move to their squad as a replacement for Harry Brook, who withdrew from IPL 2025 due to national commitments. However, the Titans acted swiftly to secure the services of the former Sri Lankan captain, adding depth and experience to their lineup.
Gujarat Titans are set to face the in-form Delhi Capitals on Saturday, April 19, at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This high-stakes clash promises to be a thrilling encounter as both teams vie for supremacy in the league.
