In a bold and controversial move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Monday, May 17, that the remainder of the IPL 2025 season will proceed as planned. However, with lingering doubts over the return of overseas players, the decision could shake up the tournament dynamics, leaving several teams scrambling to fill the void left by their star performers. While Jake Fraser-McGurk has already ruled out his return, Mitchell Starc’s manager has reportedly conveyed the Aussie pacer’s unavailability as well.
Voicing his dissent in no uncertain terms, former Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings speedster Mitchell Johnson has slammed the decision, emphasizing the importance of player safety and well-being amidst the tense circumstances that unfolded just a week ago.
Johnson’s Fiery Critique of the BCCI
Known for his fiery demeanor on and off the field, Johnson didn’t hold back as he addressed the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the return of overseas players. In a scathing column for The West Australian, the former left-arm quick questioned the BCCI’s approach, putting player welfare above financial gains.
Johnson wrote, “If I were asked to return to India and complete the tournament, my answer would be crystal clear—no. Lives and safety must always come first, not paychecks. This is a personal choice, and no player should be pressured or coerced into returning, no matter how hard the IPL or the Pakistan Super League—which has also been halted—pushes for it. Both leagues should either end now or consider relocating, though that would come with significant financial implications.”
As the cricketing world braces for the restart, all eyes will be on the high-stakes clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
