The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have once again proven their commitment to the environment by launching a groundbreaking waste management initiative during their home matches in the TATA IPL 2025 season at the iconic Eden Gardens. This move underscores how cricket can be a catalyst for positive change, blending sport with sustainability.
Major sporting events often leave behind a significant environmental footprint, but KKR has turned this narrative on its head. Across their first five home games, the franchise successfully diverted a staggering 35,113 kilograms of waste from landfills. This achievement is a testament to their meticulously planned waste management strategy, which combined fan engagement, education, and advanced recycling techniques.
To ensure maximum impact, KKR installed 200 waste segregation bins throughout Eden Gardens, making it easier for fans to dispose of their trash responsibly. A dedicated āGreen Teamā roamed the stadium, assisting spectators and spreading awareness about the importance of waste segregation. Anti-litter messages and campaigns were also prominently displayed, encouraging fans to adopt eco-friendly habits.
Behind the scenes, KKR provided comprehensive waste management training to food vendors, catering staff, and other key stakeholders. The sorting team processed over 10 types of waste, including food, paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, and aluminium foil. These materials were then sent to composting centres and recycling units, ensuring minimal environmental impact.

The results speak for themselves: KKR recycled 27,194 kilograms of waste, composted 4,885 kilograms, upcycled 2,826 kilograms of materials like team flags, and donated 207 kilograms of food. These numbers highlight the franchiseās leadership in promoting sustainability within the IPL ecosystem.
Juhi Chawla, Co-Owner of Kolkata Knight Riders, emphasised the broader vision behind the initiative. āCricket has the power to unite and inspire, and at KKR, we believe itās also a powerful platform to promote sustainability. Through this waste management initiative, weāre taking meaningful steps toward reducing our environmental impact and encouraging our fans to be part of the solution. Itās not just about cheering for our teamāitās about coming together to protect the planet we all share,ā she said.
KKR extended their gratitude to volunteers, implementation partners, sanitation workers, and fans for making this initiative a roaring success. This program is part of the franchiseās larger mission to create a positive impact beyond the cricket field.
Earlier in the season, KKR also introduced eco-friendly jersey packaging as part of their āRuns to Rootsā campaign. Made from biodegradable materials, the packaging aligns seamlessly with the teamās sustainability goals.
