In what could mark the end of an era, Virat Kohli has reportedly informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about his decision to retire from Test cricket. However, as per the Indian Express, the board is making a last-ditch effort to convince the cricketing maestro to reconsider his choice.
The former Indian captain has been grappling with a prolonged lean patch in the longest format of the game. Over his last 39 Tests, Kohli has managed to accumulate just 2028 runs at an average of 30.72, a stark contrast to his earlier dominance. His overall Test average has also taken a hit, currently resting at 46.85. The 2024-25 tour of Australia further highlighted his struggles, where he could muster only 190 runs at a modest average of 23.75.
Kohli’s Potential Retirement Could Leave India’s Batting Lineup in Flux
During a candid conversation on Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s official channel, Kohli hinted at his waning Test career, stating, “I might not have an Australia tour again in me in four years’ time.” Should he stick to his decision, India’s upcoming tour of England could feature a relatively inexperienced batting lineup.
With Rohit Sharma, who led India in 24 Tests, already retired from the format, the responsibility will fall on the shoulders of KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant to stabilize the batting order. Youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal will also be under immense pressure to deliver on the big stage.
