Liverpool in advanced talks to offload £40m star defender hailed as limitless talent.

Liverpool in advanced talks to offload £40m star defender hailed as limitless talent.

Liverpool, the reigning Premier League champions, are reportedly on the verge of sealing a deal with Bayer Leverkusen for their promising young centre-back, Jarell Quansah. Sources indicate that negotiations between the clubs are in the advanced stages, with an agreement tantalizingly close.

Quansah’s Journey: From Anfield to the Bundesliga?

Quansah, who made his Liverpool debut in August 2023 against Newcastle United, has since donned the Reds’ jersey 58 times. However, despite his undeniable talent, the 22-year-old has found regular playing time hard to come by, featuring in just 13 Premier League matches during the 2024/25 season. This potential move to Bayer Leverkusen could be the catalyst he needs to reignite his career.

Why Leverkusen Wants Quansah

The German club is in urgent need of a defensive stalwart following the departure of Jonathan Tah, who joined Bayern Munich on a free transfer. Quansah’s arrival would not only fill this void but also mark a significant statement of intent from Leverkusen. Currently representing England in the Under-21 European Championship, Quansah’s focus is divided between the pitch and the negotiating table as both clubs work tirelessly to finalize the transfer.

According to Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, talks are progressing smoothly, with an agreement nearing completion. Liverpool initially set an ambitious asking price of £40 million, but Leverkusen, whose record signing remains Kerem Demirbay at £25 million, is unlikely to meet that figure. Nonetheless, Quansah’s transfer could still eclipse Leverkusen’s previous record, fetching at least £25 million.

A Separate Deal from Wirtz’s Mega Move

It’s worth noting that Quansah’s potential transfer is unrelated to Florian Wirtz’s blockbuster £117 million move from Leverkusen to Liverpool, which is expected to be finalized this week. This deal stands on its own, underscoring Leverkusen’s determination to bolster their defensive line.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that Quansah has already verbally agreed to personal terms with Leverkusen. “Bayer and Liverpool are closing in on a permanent deal, worth £30 million plus add-ons for the defender,” Romano stated on X.

Quansah’s Ambition to Grow

While on international duty with England’s Under-21s, Quansah hinted at the necessity of leaving Liverpool to further his career. “I’m in a very good position to take the next step. It just comes with working hard and staying focused on what I can control,” he said. His departure would leave a noticeable gap in Liverpool’s defence, making the acquisition of a new centre-back a priority for Arne Slot, the Premier League-winning head coach.

Van Dijk’s High Praise

Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool’s captain, has been effusive in his praise for Quansah. After a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Manchester City in March 2024, Van Dijk lauded his younger teammate, stating, “The sky is the limit. He just has to stay humble and keep working hard, keep improving, because there will be a lot of bumps along the road as well.”

Van Dijk added, “Every challenge that was thrown his way, he dealt with outstandingly. He’s been important.”

As the transfer saga unfolds, all eyes are on Quansah, whose next move could shape the trajectory of his burgeoning career. Will Bayer Leverkusen secure their defensive linchpin? Or will Liverpool find a way to retain their young talent? Only time will tell.
