Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has sounded a cautionary note for Liverpool as they eye a potential move for Eintracht Frankfurt’s rising star, Hugo Ekitike. The Reds, fresh off a triumphant Premier League campaign under new manager Arne Slot, are diving headfirst into the summer transfer window with ambitions to strengthen their squad even further.
Liverpool have already made waves with three marquee signings: the dynamic Florian Wirtz, the versatile Milos Kerkez, and the explosive Jeremie Frimpong. The club has also bolstered their goalkeeping department with the additions of Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman. However, while the arrivals have grabbed headlines, the Reds are equally focused on trimming their squad, with key departures including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher, Jarell Quansah, and Nat Phillips.
Amid the shuffle, the futures of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez have come under intense scrutiny. While Liverpool are reportedly keen to retain Diaz, Nunez appears to be on the market, with Serie A giants Napoli showing significant interest. The Reds are hoping to recoup a substantial portion of the £85 million they splashed on the Uruguayan forward.

In a recent update, Romano highlighted Ekitike as a prime candidate to fill the void left by Nunez. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the Italian journalist revealed, “Liverpool are actively working on this deal. They’re exploring the possibility of bringing in Hugo Ekitike to reinforce their attacking options. The club is keen to add another striker but is waiting to finalize Nunez’s departure, with ongoing discussions with Napoli.”
He added, “Liverpool are poised to make a move for a new striker once they resolve Nunez’s situation. Ekitike remains high on their list, but this isn’t a deal that will happen overnight. Patience is key, but the French forward is undoubtedly a player Liverpool are monitoring closely.”
Romano also provided a fresh update on Ekitike’s future, stating, “His next destination remains uncertain, but the Premier League appears to be the most likely option for the striker, who enjoyed a stellar season last year. Liverpool’s interest in him has been long-standing, and they remain a strong contender. However, the timing of Nunez’s exit will play a crucial role in how Liverpool proceed with Ekitike and other attacking targets.”
However, Romano also issued a word of warning to the Reds: “Ekitike’s services are in high demand, with several English clubs still in the race. The situation remains fluid, and I’m confident we’ll have more clarity in the coming weeks regarding his potential move to the Premier League.”
