Liverpool’s summer transfer saga is heating up, with Fabrizio Romano’s latest updates suggesting the Reds might miss out on two of their top targets. Despite a promising start to the window, the Premier League champions could face setbacks in their pursuit of key players.

Liverpool have already made headlines with their aggressive approach, securing Jeremie Frimpong and Armin Pecsi before smashing their transfer record to bring in Florian Wirtz for a staggering £116 million. The Merseyside club is also on the verge of completing a £40 million deal for Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, further cementing their position as Europe’s biggest spenders this summer.

With investments nearing £200 million, Liverpool’s ambition is clear, but their shopping spree isn’t over yet. The Reds are reportedly targeting reinforcements upfront, on the wings, in midfield, and at the back. Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi has emerged as a prime defensive target, but the latest developments could throw a spanner in the works.

Guehi, one of England’s most consistent centre-backs in recent seasons, has been a standout performer for Palace. However, his future at Selhurst Park hangs in the balance as his contract expires in 2026. Liverpool seemed to lead the race for his signature, with reports suggesting the £50 million-rated defender is keen on a move to Anfield. But a twist in the tale has surfaced.

According to The Guardian, Guehi is prepared to see out the final year of his contract and leave Palace as a free agent in 2026. The report indicates that the defender won’t be rushed into a decision and is open to staying put if the right opportunity doesn’t arise. While he has no intention of extending his contract, regular playing time remains a key consideration for the 23-year-old.

Liverpool’s interest in Guehi is genuine, and the club is expected to ramp up their pursuit once Jarell Quansah’s £30 million move to Bayer Leverkusen is finalised. However, Guehi’s willingness to stay put could complicate matters. The report highlights:

“Guehi will face a big decision if Liverpool follow up their interest. Joining the best team in England under Arne Slot would be hard to resist, but regular playing time is a priority. The possibility of staying at Palace for another season before leaving on a free hasn’t been ruled out.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s pursuit of Alexander Isak, their top striker target, also appears uncertain. Fabrizio Romano has poured cold water on the rumours, stating:

“Liverpool would try for Isak if he became available, but it’s a very difficult deal at the moment. The club doesn’t see it as a realistic option right now.”

As the transfer window progresses, Liverpool’s ambitious plans are under scrutiny. Will they secure their targets, or will they be forced to explore alternative options? Only time will tell.
