Liverpool set to cut ties with star player as two major factors shape summer transfer fee.

Liverpool set to cut ties with star player as two major factors shape summer transfer fee.

The whispers around Anfield have grown louder, and it seems Darwin Nunez’s time at Liverpool is nearing its end. Reports suggest the Reds are prepared to part ways with the Uruguayan striker this summer, even if it means taking a financial hit on the £64 million they splashed out to bring him in from Benfica just two years ago.

Nunez, the once-promising talent who dazzled with 34 goals in 41 appearances for Benfica in the 2021/22 season, was handpicked by Jurgen Klopp despite data warnings. The German manager saw potential in the raw, explosive forward, but the gamble has yet to pay off. After a rocky couple of seasons, Nunez’s stock has fallen, and he’s now firmly down the pecking order under new boss Arne Slot.

Last season, Nunez started just seven Premier League games, a far cry from the expectations that came with his hefty price tag. While most of Liverpool’s squad has flourished under Slot’s tactical tweaks, Nunez has struggled to find his footing. Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr came knocking in January with a £59 million bid, but Liverpool turned it down, unwilling to disrupt their title chase. However, with Al Nassr now moving on to Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran, Nunez’s options have shifted.

La Liga giants Atletico Madrid have emerged as a potential suitor, and Nunez himself is said to be open to a fresh challenge in Spain or Italy. Al-Hilal, too, has reportedly reached out to Liverpool to explore a deal, but the Reds are holding firm on their valuation. According to talkSPORT, Liverpool are seeking a fee north of £59 million, a figure they believe reflects Nunez’s contributions as a starter: 25 goals and 13 assists in 49 starts.

Liverpool’s decision to stick to their guns, even with non-Saudi clubs interested, shows they’re not willing to accept a bargain. Meanwhile, the Reds are already eyeing replacements, with Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Benjamin Sesko, and Joao Pedro reportedly on their shortlist.

‘Nunez is understood to be interested in a move to either Italy or Spain. TalkSPORT understands Atletico Madrid hold a genuine interest. Liverpool are already assessing options to replace Nunez internally. Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Benjamin Sesko, and Joao Pedro are among the names considered.’

As the summer transfer window heats up, all eyes will be on Nunez’s next move. Will he reignite his career in Spain or Italy? Or could a surprise bid from another league bring a twist to the tale?
