Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown has reassured fans that Andre Onana will remain at Old Trafford next season, emphasizing that football isn’t as simple as “a video game.”
Manchester United have endured a disastrous campaign under Ruben Amorim, who took over from Erik ten Hag in November. The Red Devils are currently languishing in 16th place in the Premier League as the season approaches its final weekend.
Amorim’s side had a chance to salvage some pride by winning the Europa League, but a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday only added to the mounting pressure on the manager and the squad.
Onana, the Red Devils’ goalkeeper, has been one of the players under intense scrutiny this season, with rumors swirling about a potential summer exit. However, the likelihood of United recouping the £47 million they paid Inter Milan for the Cameroonian seems slim.
Brown, a former United stalwart, has urged fans to understand that selling a player isn’t as straightforward as “pressing one button.” Speaking to bestbettingsite.co.uk, he said, “Yes, I think you have to. He’s made some mistakes this season, and you don’t want that from a goalkeeper. But the pressure has been immense. Maybe he hasn’t handled it the best way, but he’s still been given chances by the manager.”
Brown continued, “Fans need to understand it’s not like a video game where you press a button and the player is sold. There’s a lot of factors involved. I get these questions all the time, but it doesn’t work like that. Onana will be there next season, and we can only hope he steps up. If he does, all this talk will fade away.”
The former defender also stressed the importance of supporting players through tough times. “You have to give them support. If they’ve had a bad game, they need to know they’re still good enough. Otherwise, it only gets worse. Onana is a great shot-stopper at times, but he’s let in some silly goals. He needs a chance to prove himself.”
Looking ahead, Brown believes the entire squad needs to raise their standards. “Next season, with new players coming in, it’s up to him to improve. It’s been a rough season for everyone, and the standard needs to be higher across the board.”
