KKR Crumbles to 6th Lowest Total Against MI in IPL 2025 Clash – What Went Wrong?

The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai witnessed a cricketing showdown for the ages as the Mumbai Indians (MI) locked horns with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on March 31, 2025. Winning the toss, MI opted to field first, setting the stage for a bowling masterclass that left fans on the edge of their seats.

KKR’s innings got off to a rocky start as Trent Boult unleashed a fiery yorker to send Sunil Narine (0 off 2) packing early. Quinton de Kock followed suit, attempting an ambitious loft that ended in the safe hands of Deepak Chahar after scoring just one run. But the real game-changer was MI’s surprise weapon—Ashwani Kumar.

Ashwani struck gold by trapping KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane (11 off 7) with a catch by Tilak Varma. Venkatesh Iyer, the ₹23.75 crore auction sensation, continued his dismal form, scoring a mere three runs off nine balls before falling to Chahar. Angkrish Raghuvanshi showed glimpses of brilliance with a quickfire 26 off 16 but was eventually undone by MI captain Hardik Pandya.

The carnage didn’t stop there. Rinku Singh (17 off 14) fell victim to Ashwani’s impeccable line and length. The debutant then delivered two scrambled-seam deliveries to dismantle Manish Pandey (19 off 14) and Andre Russell (5 off 11), both of whom could have steadied KKR’s sinking ship. Vignesh Puthur added to the misery, dismissing Harshit Rana for four runs off eight balls.

Ramandeep Singh provided a late spark with a brisk 22 off 12, including one four and two sixes, but his resistance ended when he was caught by Hardik off Mitchell Santner’s bowling. KKR were bundled out for a paltry 116 in 16.2 overs, marking their sixth-lowest total against MI in IPL history.
