Liverpool’s talisman Mohamed Salah has opened up about the “tense” relationship he shared with a former teammate, admitting they were never close off the pitch. The Egyptian superstar has been in scintillating form this season, propelling Liverpool to their 20th Premier League title with a remarkable 28 goals and 18 assists.
At 32, Salahās elite mentality has been a driving force for the Reds, with head coach Arne Slot tweaking the teamās system to maximize the wingerās impact in the final third. While Salah has been Liverpoolās standout performer, the current setup is a far cry from the glory days under Jurgen Klopp, where the Egyptian formed a lethal trio with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.
Despite their on-field chemistry, Salah has revealed that his relationship with Mane was far from smooth. In an interview with LāEquipe, Salah said, “Yes, there was tension with Sadio. But we were professional until the end. I donāt think it affected the team. Itās human to want more, and I understand that. Heās a competitor. Off the pitch, we werenāt very close, but we always respected each other.”
When asked about Maneās claims of him being “selfish,” Salah responded with a mix of indifference and confidence. “I donāt care. People can think what they want; itās their right. But I invite everyone to note that the person who provided Mane with the most assists is me. We can look at the facts, but itās easier to throw out phrases like that. I know how it works. As long as it stays within the bounds of respect, Iām fine with it. But that doesnāt mean itās true. I know what Iāve done, and my conscience is clear.”
Salah also addressed the speculation surrounding his future at Liverpool before he signed a two-year contract extension. “It was a possibility, yes. It was a bit strange because we were having a strong season, and the negotiations werenāt easy. But in the end, allās well that ends well: weāre champions, and Iām staying for two more years.”
Reflecting on his mindset during the season, Salah added, “I guess it was a huge advantage because I had the best statistical season of my life. The possibility that it could be my last season here gave me the drive to make the most of it. I had this mindset: if the club didnāt want to extend my contract, no problem. Letās finish strong so I can leave with a bang.”
