Tim David, who has emerged as a finisher for the side, believes the team’s over-attacking intent on tricky pitches has been a factor. “We’ve tried to over-attack on surfaces that haven’t been true,” David explained. “People think of Bengaluru as a flat pitch, but it hasn’t been this season.”
High Risk, Low Reward: The Powerplay Plight
RCB’s aggressive approach at home has backfired spectacularly. The team has lost a wicket every 12 balls on average in the powerplay at the Chinnaswamy, compared to a wicket every 60 balls when playing away. Their high-risk, low-reward shot selection has been glaring, with a wicket falling every five balls on average while attempting aggressive shots at home.
Patidar emphasized the importance of learning from past mistakes. “We try not to dwell on the home games we’ve lost,” he said. “Shot selection and execution are crucial here, especially on pitches that have been two-paced with varying bounce.”
Turning the Tide: Can RCB Make the Chinnaswamy a Fortress Again?
For RCB to make a serious run at the title, they must turn their home ground into a fortress. Teams like Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who have each lifted the IPL trophy five times, have shown the importance of dominating at home. Devdutt Padikkal remains optimistic. “It’s just a coincidence that our wins have come away from home,” he said. “We’ve played some really good cricket throughout the tournament. It’s important we carry this momentum and find a way to win at home. The Chinnaswamy deserves some wins too.”
