Get Ready for the Bigger Stage: FIFA Women’s World Cup Expands to 48 Teams Starting 2031

Get Ready for the Bigger Stage: FIFA Women’s World Cup Expands to 48 Teams Starting 2031

In a groundbreaking move, FIFA has officially approved the expansion of the Women’s World Cup, increasing the number of participating teams from 32 to 48. This historic decision, announced during a virtual FIFA Council meeting on Friday, will take effect starting with the 2031 edition of the tournament.

FIFA President Gianni Gianni Infantino expressed his enthusiasm for the change, stating, “This expansion provides an incredible opportunity to further develop women’s football globally. It’s a step forward in maintaining the momentum we’ve built in growing the sport and ensuring it reaches new heights.”

While the decision has been widely celebrated, FIFPRO, the world’s largest players’ union, offered a cautious welcome. They emphasized the importance of inclusive decision-making and collaborative planning to ensure the growth of the sport aligns with the needs of players and stakeholders. “The expansion of the Women’s World Cup reflects the global rise of women’s football, but it’s crucial that this growth is supported by improved labor conditions and a focus on player development,” they stated.

2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup to Remain a 32-Team Tournament

Despite the changes set for 2031, the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will continue with 32 teams. Brazil has been chosen as the host nation, marking the first time a South American country will host the prestigious tournament. This edition will be the 10th in the competition’s history, continuing to showcase the best of women’s football on the global stage.

Looking ahead to 2031, the expanded tournament will feature a 12-group format, adding 40 additional matches to the schedule. This will increase the total number of games from 64 to 104, extending the tournament’s duration by one week. The move is expected to provide more opportunities for nations to participate and for fans to enjoy even more thrilling football action.

As the world of women’s football continues to evolve, this expansion represents a significant milestone in the sport’s journey toward greater recognition and equality. With more teams, more matches, and more excitement, the future of the Women’s World Cup looks brighter than ever.
