Former Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has identified two potential signings that could help his old club get back on track, as they face a massive rebuilding phase. The Red Devils are in dire straits, sitting 16th in the Premier League after a disappointing 2-0 loss to West Ham on Sunday.
With their FA Cup and Carabao Cup campaigns already over, United’s only saving grace has been their journey to the Europa League final. A victory against Tottenham in the final would secure them a spot in next season’s Champions League, providing a much-needed boost ahead of the summer transfer window.
However, the current squad is far from ideal for Ruben Amorim’s preferred style of play, particularly in the attacking department. United’s struggles in front of goal have been evident this season, as they rank among the lowest scorers in the Premier League. To address this, the club is expected to make several signings to bolster their attacking options.
Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap and Wolves’ Matheus Matheus Cunha have emerged as potential targets, and Giggs believes they would be a significant upgrade over the current options. “It would be an improvement, most definitely,” Giggs said on the Webby & O’Neil show. “They both have Premier League experience, which is a huge advantage. The domestic form hasn’t been good enough, so they’ve already proven they can score goals.”
Giggs emphasized the importance of bringing in quality players to lift the team’s morale. “When you’re in that dressing room and better players come in, it not only excites the fans but also gives the players a boost. Seeing players like Delap and Cunha join would be exciting because they’re an improvement and they’re good players.”
However, Giggs also highlighted the scale of the challenge facing United, stating that the club needs “nine or ten players” to rebuild the squad. “We need nine or ten players, but we’re not going to get them all in this transfer window,” he said. “It’s a joke that we only have one recognized striker. In the past, we’ve had three or four quality center-forwards. If you get an injury or lose form, you need someone to step in. That’s going to take time, but that’s modern football.”
Giggs’ comments underscore the urgency for United to address their squad depth and quality if they hope to return to their former glory. The summer transfer window will be crucial in determining whether they can turn their fortunes around.
