Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has dropped a bombshell, revealing that it will be “very difficult” for any European heavyweight to lure Tottenham’s star defender Cristian Romero this summer. With Spurs set to compete in the UEFA Champions League, the Argentine’s departure seems increasingly unlikely.
Despite a disappointing Premier League campaign in 2024/25, where Tottenham finished a dismal 17th, the North London club found redemption in the Europa League. Their triumphant victory over Manchester United in the final not only secured silverware but also cemented their place in Europe’s elite competition next season.
While the Europa League glory wasn’t enough to save Ange Postecoglou’s job, it may have been the key factor in retaining Romero. The 26-year-old centre-back has been a rock at the back for Spurs, and his leadership qualities have made him indispensable.
Romano explained, “Atletico Madrid love the player, and Diego Simeone is a big fan. They would love to bring Cuti Romero to the club one day. However, with Tottenham in the Champions League and embarking on a new project under Thomas Frank, I don’t see them losing a leader like Romero this summer. Daniel Levy wants to keep him, and Frank sees him as crucial both technically and for his leadership.”
He added, “Atletico will try, as they have in the past, but with Tottenham back in the Champions League, it’s going to be very tough. Had they lost the Europa League final in Bilbao, things might have been different. But now, their Champions League status makes it complicated.”
Atletico’s desire for Romero is no secret. Manager Diego Simeone recently praised the defender
